1. For those who haven't booked a flight to Australia yet, then the people from Eminence Orchestra would like to remind you that you still have some time left to go ahead and do so. After all, one of the most popular video game orchestral performances is headed for Sydney and Melbourne in merely a week. That's right, in case you forgot, Eminence Symphony Orchestra's A Night in Fantasia 2007 - Symphonic Games Edition, will be making waves in the Land of the Koalas, via their proven musical talent as well as their skill in performing the music from video games that we know and love. Set to make an appearance in Sydney on April 20 and 21, then in Melbourne on April 27, the 60-piece orchesrtra will be accompanied by a 30-piece choir and will be conducted by Philip Chu. Meanwhile, tunes that fans can look forward to will include classic video game themes from titles such as Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy XII, FF Tactics and the rest of the FF series, Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Shadow of the Colossus, Tales of Legendia, Metal Gear Solid, WoW: The Burning Crusade, Super Mario Brothers and Legend of Zelda, to name just a few. Those who want a seat for the show can either order their tickets online via TicketMaster, or those who will be seeing the Sydney performance can simply drop by the local Kinokuniya store. Now, there's just one song request that I'd like to make... please, please, please play Radical Dreamers from Chrono Cross. Either that, or I'll be happy with whatever Chocobo theme that they put in there. So with the days ticking away until the performance begins, what song would you want to hear the Eminence folks play? Více...
2. British educational charity D&AD has announced that several Sony and Nintendo titles have been nominated for its prestigious Yellow Pencil design awards. The D&AD Global Awards aim to recognise original, well-executed, and inspiring work which is "relevant to its context." The nominees from the Sony camp include the PSP title LocoRoco and the PS2 titles Shadow of the Colossus and Buzz!: The Big Quiz. Over on the Nintendo side, DS title Brain Training and Wii title Wii Sports were nominated. When the D&AD started its gaming awards category last year, a DS title - Nintendogs - took home a Yellow Pencil award. Resident Evil 4, which was released for both the Nintendo GameCube and Sony PS2, also won a Yellow Pencil in last year's awards ceremonies. The winners of this year's Yellow Pencil awards will be announced on May 24. Více...
3. The PS3 has been in Europe for less than a month and its titles are sitting on top of the charts. Resistance: Fall of Man took the top spot in Italy and Spain. Germany on the other hand was taken by storm by S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl (both the normal and limited editions). The three countries definitely have different gaming tastes with the exception of Insomniac's Resistance, Evolution's MotorStorm, Formula One Championship Edition, Virtua Tennis 3, and the PS2's Final Fantasy XII. Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars are surprisingly absent from the Spain and Germany charts even though it's a definite hit in the UK. Oh well, to each their own. Here's the complete list for Italy, Spain and Germany: Italy (for week ending on April 1) Resistance: Fall of Man Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 MotorStorm Formula One Championship Edition Final Fantasy XII Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars Virtua Tennis 3 Ridge Racer 7 Pro Evolution Soccer 6 Spain (for week ending on April 1) Resistance: Fall of Man Dr Kawashima's Brain Training Formula One Championship Edition Virtua Tennis 3 MotorStorm Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2 Spectrobes Animal Crossing: Wild World Call of Duty 3 Final Fantasy XII Germany (for week ending on March 25) S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl Resistance: Fall of Man MotorStorm S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl Limited Edition The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar Formula One Championship Edition Silent Hunter 4: Wolves of the Pacific Final Fantasy XII The Sims 2: Seasons Virtua Tennis 3 Více...
4. "I think this is going to be the year for PSP, I think it's going to be a fantastic year for it. A very, very good year." That's how confident John Koller is on the fate of Sony's handheld for 2007. And he actually has a well-founded reason for suddenly gushing like a schoolgirl. The recent implementation of the PSP price drop to US 169 apparently gave a whole lot of loving to Sony as PSP sales shot up to 300 percent - in just two days, at that. And all that love they'll be taking to the bank with them. Not only that, but the once-comatosed UMD scene suddenly gets a second chance at life as UMD sales also got a nice revival. Also being held responsible for this rejuvenation of PSP sales is the new marketing scheme taken by Sony through its "Dude, Get Your Own" campaign. According to Koller, since the launch of the new campaign, they immediately saw an increase in sales. But admittedly, they also took a close, hard look at Wal-Mart experience during the last Black Friday. But apart from all that, "Our greatest successes take place when publishers and developers recognize the value of the PSP owner as a PSP owner not repurposing a title," further explains Koller. "We've actively encouraged third parties in that direction." To maintain the momentum of the PSP, Koller reveals that they will be having some major announcements coming this year. We expect to hear about them in the coming months, and you can bet we'l' be there to give you the heads up. Více...
5. As the first PSP entry in the Smash Court Tennis series, Namco Bandai is going all out to make sure that Smash Court Tennis 3 gives a good showing. It's got twice as many customizable items such as racquets and clothes as its predecessor. Players also get to try their hand at perfecting an array of tennis strokes from a selection of top ranked and promising professional tennis stars. Speaking of tennis stars, the ones that are in Smash Court Tennis 3 are actually modeled after their real-life counterparts in order to add a more realistic feel to the game. You can check out screenshots of them in this previous article. It's not just all about the looks, too. Players can test and improve their skills through the game's various gameplay modes including Arcade, Exhibition, and Pro Tour Mode as well as the various mini-games. Smash Court Tennis 3 from Namco Bandai is slated for a Q3 release in the U.S. For now, check out the new court screenshots below. Více...
6. For an Alpha release that's coded in Lua, this is pretty well done. And to think, it's PSPokemon">sony_psp_player's very first homebrew game. It's called PSPokemon, and from the name itself, you'd know it's (in the developer's own words) "a Pokemon clone." As of now though, all you can basically do in this baby-phase Alpha release is control the Godzilla-sized Ash around the map you see in the pic above. You can also enter the houses, but they're pretty bare. Try it for yourself; no one's stopping you. The download doesn't contain a readme, so we can't quite direct you to any. Basically, the developer just wanted to get this early version out so that people could reply with their feedback. Is it a good project to pursue? Hands down, I've always been a Pokemon fan, and any Poke-exposure on the PSP is very much welcome for me. the_darkside_986 (of "Die Critters Die" homebrew fame) seems to agree with me and said in the forums: "I'm going to get a DS to play Pearl/Diamond. But this sounds interesting so I'll try it. I hope this project really goes somewhere. Good luck with it." So, to sony_psp_player, godspeed and may way see the full version soon! UPDATE: sony_psp_player released Alpha 2 of his PSPokemon game already, so feel free to try it out! Enjoy! 7. As the brain training titles for the DS pile up, the PSP contender, Hot Brain from Midway Games is shaping up to give our minds a bit of a workout. Now meet your future mentor and guide, Professor Fred Warmer. The guide is voiced by Fred Willard (Anchorman and American Wedding) and judging from the dialogue the character seems a lot more interesting. According to him, "Losing your memory does have a bright side... You keep meeting new people." In the trailer, the Hot Brain categories are shown: logic, memory, math, language, and concentration. Fred Willard also gives some tips for gameplay plus the different gameplay modes. Hot Brain for the PSP is slated for a summer release. In the meantime, enjoy the trailer and prepare to get your brains smokin' hot. Více...
8. Wanna see something cool? Lilbart90 has announced on our PSP Development forums that he has found a way of adding IR keyboard support to v0.4a of Stealth Kill's CS Combined Assault port for the PSP. "All i did was copy the eboot from QUAKEPSP (with IR Keyboard) and replaced it with the eboot in the CSCombatAssault folder," posted lilbart90. "Voila it worked perfectly!" Still skeptical? Check out the video below. Remember guys, all of the original code in the download below were made by rein4ce and Stealth Kill. Lilbart90 just took both rein4ce's QuakePSP and StealthKill's CS Combined Assault homebrew games and found a way to make them work together in order to integrate IR keyboard support on the latter game. You guys can download lilbart90's pre-made data below for some keyboard-busting Counter-Strike action on your PSPs. If you wish to discuss this release, click on the "visit" link below to head on over to our PSP Development forums. 9. Brain training isn't only for DS owners, y'know. Hot Brain: Fire Up Your Mind, which is exclusive to the Sony PSP handheld videogame system, is a game that engages your mind through a series of puzzles and challenges designed to raise the activity and temperature of your brain. It has quite a variety of fun yet challenging mental activities that helps build you mind in such as logic, memory, math, language and concentration. Hot Brain has four main game modes. You can test your Hot Brain-powered mind skills through the game's single-player Practice and Test modes. Better yet, you can challenge up to three people via ad-hoc connection in Hot Brain's two multiplayer modes: Brain Race and Think Tank. Hot Brain from Midway Games is slated for release in the U.S. on June 18. Check out the new screenshots below for a look at the game. You can also check out a vid of the game here. Více...
10. Apparently, the rumor that Sony Ericcson is working on a PSP phone stuck like glue to some people. And they are seriously considering the limitless possibilities that this project may bring forth to the industry. The folks at Pocket Gamer have already created a list of the things they would want to have in the PSP phone. It's a pretty concise list, actually. First up, they'd want it to be a slider, similar to the W850i model. Then, they want to have landscape gaming in it, complete with shoulder buttons and 3D support for that extra push against the new N-gage phones. Of course, what's the point of having a PSP Phone if it can't be connected to the PSP or the PS3, right? Yep, that's on the wish list, too. And last item on the list, they would want to have those nifty media applications, such as a camera, an MP3 player application, and video player functions. "Oh, and it would need to be 3G, please," they stress. Hmmm... a pretty lofty wish list. Then again, wishing is for free so why not go lavish on it, eh? Still no confirmation from Sony about this rumor but Kotaku reports that they managed to squeeze in the question to the folks at SCEA, and they got the usual "no comment" template response. However, John Koller, the PSP's senior marketing manager, did say that they "are always evaluating new technology and listening to what their consumers want." Více...
11. The lone screenshot from last November was the first look we had of 2K Sports' newest major league baseball game The BIGS. This time we've got the newest batch of screens for your eyes only. The BIGS, aka MLB: The BIGS, is a multiplatform (Xbox360, PS3, PS2, PSP, and Wii) sports title developed by Blue Castle Games. It features online capabilities for up to four players, minigames to train the players (we imagine it might be like Virtua Tennis), and power ups. As far as the visuals go, we really can't complain. We're intrigued as to what the batter and pitcher are doing in the middle of a busy city street but we've yet to see those outrageous special effects. We'll quit with the prattle now and keep our noses peeled for more info on this. The BIGS is slated to slide on the shelves in June 25 (according to Wikipedia). Check out the screens for now. Více...
12. Careening over to your handheld with the addicting (?!) smell of burnt rubber, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift has finally gone gold. Even more good news for racing fans: Namco Bandai has announced new features for the handheld title that's spun off from the PS2 version. Swap Meet - wirelessly trade your customized and tricked-out cars with your friends in a non-career mode Tuner Shop - offer a multi-grade oil change as a purchasable item to temporarily increase your cars' speed and performance Extras - unlockable content (pictures and media) from the movie and the real world of racing Some of you might think that the "Tokyo Drift" movie was a let down, but hey!, that doesn't mean the game would totally suck. Y'know what they often say: "Gameplay experience may change when playing online." And a racer that has wireless support would definitely go far (plus all the addiction over car fumes). Get your shift sticks ready; more screens in 3, 2, 1... Více...
13. With this year's PSP-Hacks Homebrew Competition well under way, we pick up news of one of the contest's contenders, created by coder J@ricanese - you may remember him from the NPHAPP application. This new entry is a homebrew game titled Simon v0.1, and as its name implies, it's a memory game styled after "Simon says." Its objective is simple: Simon will light up one of four colors on your game display, and you have to punch in the same colored sequence to advance to the next round. This current version carries seven rounds of increasing difficulty. As for the controls: Up = Green Right = Red Down = Yellow Left = Blue Start = Advance to the next round J@ricanese further notes that these features may be added by the next update: Background music - will be a few songs included, or ability to randomly play from Music folder Theme Support: I am already making different themes for the game including a Mets (New York Baseball Team) theme Access to music options and theme options available in a new options menu. The file is available for download below - just remember to have your copy of PSPBrew ready. The author would also very much like to hear feedback from the guys by way of this game's original release thread (see source link below). With that said, we hope you enjoy the download, and enjoy this game. Download: Simon v0.1 Více...
14. Submitted by whoelse, this tip-off concerns a deal that some of you guys might raise the financial alarm for. While the official word from Sony claims that the PSP price drops remain an exclusive for North America and Canada, maybe it extends farther than we thought. Like, across oceans and France farther. From France gaming store MicroMania, PSP-Generation was able to sniff out the respective prices for both PSP packs that include a 2GB or 4GB memory stick. Respectively, the Media Manager Edition and Value Pack cost around 230 and 280 (around US 300 and 380, by current conversion rates and with a bit of room for allowance). Still no official word from Sony, so for now, we raise the red Rumor card. If you wish to investigate for your own, and do your own French-English translation (and currency conversion), no one's stopping you. The Source link is below. Více...
15. Originally created in Electronic Arts' California studios, the latest title in the Tiger Woods franchise was moved down south to the Electronic Arts Tiburon studios in Orlando, Florida. Because the studio already sports an impressive list of sports titles in its dev portfolio, EA Tiburon seems to be the significant sports title development studio for Electronic Arts. With titles such as Madden NFL Football, NASCAR and NCAA Football under its belt, EA Tiburon is confident they could also improve on the golf title to make it even greater. Steve Chiang, general manager at EA Tiburon and Top 7 of 2006's hottest 100 devs, said, "We are working our tails off to bring quality games. We are here because we love games." It looks like the next title for the franchise could be gearing up for a total next-gen makeover, since the move now delegated the title to a single studio instead of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07's split-studio development scheme. The news report from St. Petersburg Times also said that the next-gen Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 would be released by summer with user content functionality, such as: Gamers would be able to share screenshots and characters with friends and family Gamers can create social networks with fellow gamers Gamers can play as themselves by creating their animated image from a photo Gamers can play with people from across the world, but not in real time Více...
16. PSP homebrew coder Hopper dropped by the QJ.Net Forum earlier to let everybody in on an interesting homebrew game we think the Zelda fans here may fancy. It's a Lua-coded Zelda game demo the author built for a college project; Aside from carrying Link over to the PSP dev scene, the game carries these other features: Tile based game engine Collision Detection Houses Scrolling Map (with dodgy dodgy collision) One Dungeon AI enemies (Path finding enemies that can see Link and will run after him but won't hurt him =]) Multiplayer online game Modified version of Merick's map maker(used my own code to read from tile sheet, doesn't offer as many features, just drawing) Some stupid weird stuff i put in to amuse myself Guys hoping to see a full version of this demo may have to wait - Hopper does not have any intention of going further with the project. In relation to that announcement, Hopper's also letting everybody know that the game's codes are available for other coders who would like to know how it was done. As per requested by the author (in the README, to be specific), we won't be hosting the file - but a download link is available at the game's QJ.Net Forum release thread. Be sure sure to view the README for Hopper's full accreditation of the other coders who helped make this Zelda demo (we spied names like SoulKiller and Danzeff in the list), and visit the forums for some extra game tidbits, such as discussions, and demo videos. We've posted one of the vids here as a teaser of what to expect - Happy viewing! Visit: QJ's PSP Development Forum Více...
